The Inside Scoop
Did you know?
The third member of Japan's 'big three' sweet breads (after anpan and cream pan). Created in 1900 by the third-generation owner of Kimuraya bakery — the same family that invented anpan. The original filling was apricot jam, not strawberry. The strawberry version we know today came later and eventually took over as the standard.
How to eat
- 1Fair warning: jam pan looks almost identical to anpan from the outside. If you can't read the label, it's a 50/50 gamble — but a pleasant one either way.
- 2The jam is sweeter and fruitier than anko. If you find anpan's earthy sweetness unfamiliar, jam pan might feel more approachable.
- 3The filling can be quite runny. Open it gently and keep it upright to avoid a jam situation.
