The Inside Scoop
Did you know?
Created in 1904 at Nakamuraya bakery in Tokyo, after the owners tasted a cream puff and thought: 'What if I put this inside bread?' The iconic glove shape wasn't for looks — slits were added to release air and prevent hollow pockets in the filling. Function became fashion.
How to eat
- 1The custard can be surprisingly generous. Bite carefully from the rounded end to avoid a cream eruption.
- 2The flavor is gentle and eggy — closer to crème pâtissière than whipped cream. A comforting, not-too-sweet experience.
- 3If you see cream pan next to anpan, grab both. They're the iconic duo of Japanese sweet bread.
