The Inside Scoop

Did you know?

Japan takes noodle texture so seriously that the packaging is a plastic architectural triumph. Multiple trays keep the wet noodles completely separated from the crispy garnishes until the exact second you're ready to eat.

How to eat

  • 1First rule: DO NOT MICROWAVE! These are meant to be eaten chilled straight from the fridge. Warming them up is a culinary tragedy.
  • 2Look for a tiny packet of clear liquid called 'hogushi-mizu' (loosening water). Pour it over the noodles and gently stir to wake them up from their fridge-slumber. (Don't drink it!)
  • 3If the package includes a small cup, it's a dipping noodle. If it's a shallow bowl, pour the dark savory sauce right over the top. Slurping is highly encouraged to maximize the cooling effect.
